IdleFreePA is a campaign of three nonprofit advocacy groups that work on air quality issues across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in partnership with the State’s environmental agency.  The campaign’s objective is to provide  truck drivers, bus drivers, fleet operators, businesses, schools, municipalities, police departments, and the general public with information about the Pennsylvania Diesel Powered Motor Vehicle Idling Act of 2008.  IdleFreePA partners seek to increase the awareness of and compliance with the law.  Because the law is statewide in scope, IdleFreePA partners have a special focus on reaching out to local police agencies to ensure the law is enforced.

The following are the IdleFreePA partners with links to their work on air quality and anti-idling, where appropriate.

  • Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP)   – The Commonwealth’s environmental agency, whose mission is to protect Pennsylvania’s air, land and water from pollution and to provide for the health and safety of its citizens through a cleaner environment.  The Department has the primary authority to implement and enforce Pennsylvania’s anti-idling law.
  • Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) –  Founded in 1969, GASP has been a diligent watchdog, educator, litigator, and policy-maker on many environmental issues, with a focus on air quality in the Pittsburgh region.   GASP coordinates IdleFreePA’s work in Western Pennsylvania.
  • American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic – The American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic envisions a world free of lung disease, and its mission is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.  Originally chartered in 1892, it is the oldest voluntary health association established in the United States to fight a specific disease, that being tuberculosis.  Today, the American Lung Association focuses on healthy air, tobacco control and all lung disease, including asthma and COPD.  It is Fighting for Air through research, advocacy and education.  The Lung Association coordinates IdleFreePA’s work in Central Pennsylvania.
  • Clean Air Council – Since 1967 Clean Air Council has been protecting everyone’s right to breathe clean air.  The Council works through public education, community advocacy, and government oversight to ensure enforcement of environmental laws.  The Council coordinates IdleFreePA’s work in Eastern Pennsylvania.

IdleFreePA also works with Clean Air Board of Central Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, and United States Environmental Protection Agency Region 3.  Funding for IdleFreePA is made possible through a grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, which is administered by the PADEP.
